Shawn Wyckoff and I, Maria Kaneko Millar, founded Sonic Escape in 2009. We've performed hundreds of shows across 45 provinces & states in Canada, the US and Mexico. Our mission is to use singing, movement, storytelling, audience interaction, and above all, our flute & violin to create an experience that is "wonderfully imaginative… with an anything goes sense of fun." (The Washington Post) Shawn and I have performed at Lincoln Center, Ottawa Chamberfest, Kennedy Center, Radio City Music Hall, The Gershwin Theatre on Broadway and Carnegie Hall. Our workshops and residencies have empowered students from Iqaluit, Nunavut down to Montgomery, Alabama and our alma mater, The Juilliard School. Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Chamber Music America and the Puffin Foundation have generously funded Sonic Escape's compositions, travels, and creation of a 5-day community residency. Why Sonic Escape’s tours are unique: We often perform in rural or hard-to-reach communities; we present multi-day residencies that bring us to schools with limited or no music programs; alongside our mainstage shows, we perform outreach/flash events – even on inline skates! – that introduce new audiences to the arts; our school performances have an emphasis on empowering girls and introducing students to new cultures. We tour all of Ontario, reaching both adult and young audiences in dozens of cities and towns from Sioux Lookout to Niagara Falls and Sarnia to Cornwall.
