Carving out an alternative and personal voice for himself, James Baley is a Juno nominated, multi-disciplinary performer and music creator from Toronto who’s unapologetic energy magnetizes audiences. James’ musical journey began in church where he was celebrated for his talents as a young vocalist/ performer but exploration of queerness was discouraged. Yearning to find an inclusive community in which to honour his identity James began sharing his talents in 2013 through the inter-spiritual community of Sunset Service where he was able to develop and unleash his expression as a queer artist. James released his debut EP “LISTEN” in 2015 and followed this two years later with the release of “ROADS” - a vulnerable EP recounting formative moments in his life. This creative work connected him with Canadian producers and songwriters across genres and generated performance opportunities with Pride Toronto, NXNE, The Basement Revue and supporting artist spots for Zaki Ibrahim and U.S. Girls. Following this he was invited to arrange backing vocals for the U.S. Girls single, “Pearly Gates” which he later adapted into a full acapella choir arrangement for their performance at the 2018 Polaris Music Prize Awards Gala. The following year he was selected to participate in the inaugural SOCAN Incubator for Creative Entrepreneurship program. Within the last two years James has leveraged these experiences to write and record with July Talk, U.S. Girls, Zaki Ibrahim, Badge Epoque and producer Azari. In 2019 his collaboration with Azari on “Gotasoul” garnered them a Juno nomination for Dance Recording of the Year. James is currently working towards more opportunities for collaboration and releasing new music in 2020.
